I just want to read a Catholic examination of these ideas. Same with Kant's Critique of Taste and Roger Scruton's Beauty, which I also enjoyed.
I really enjoyed Titus Burckhardt's work on the philosophy of art, but knowing that he was just part of the "traditionalist school" and not Catholic allowed me to better separate his thinking from my faith. Additionally, I did a bit of googling and came across a 1P5 article which was extremely critical about HVB (making some very discomforting claims). If I recall correctly, Abp Barron said there is "room" for hope that the empty hell hypothesis is true and grounded his argument with a few HVB quotes (I didn't rewatch the video prior to making this post). I have a few reservations about reading HVB's work because of that one video Abp Barron made a few years ago regarding the empty hell hypothesis.
What theologians or arguments are necessary and foundational to properly understand HVB in general, and his theological aesthetics in particular? In short do I need to do any "homework" before I start? I studied philosophy in college, and I've read the summa & summa contra gentiles, as well as selections from Boethius, Anselm, Duns Scotus, also some of Kant and the analytic philosophers like Frege and Wittgenstein but I'm a few years out and feel kind of rusty and am more than willing to do review.Īre there any responses to/criticisms of/developments to The Glory of the Lord which would be worth reading afterward?Īdditionally. How dependent is The Glory of the Lord on HVB's other works? Do I need to read his other writings to understand it? Would anyone here who is familiar with HVB be able to help with a few questions? I realize that at seven volumes it would be quite an undertaking, and I wanted to make sure I am prepared before starting. I'm interested in reading Hans Urs von Balthasar's The Glory of the Lord for its examination of theological aesthetics.
